The Importance of Speaking English Fluently

Speaking English fluently is important for many reasons. It can help you have a flowing conversation, to be understood and respond appropriately. This can help to boost your confidence, personal growth and overall communication skills. Speaking fluently can offer you more career opportunities and progression in your chosen industry and helps you to communicate with many people from all over the world.

Speak, speak, speak

One of the best and most effective ways is to practise, practise, practise. Try to speak to as many people as possible in English, whether it's friends, family or when you go out to local places. If you are in a non-English speaking country and it's more difficult to do this, try recording yourself and listening back to yourself speaking. You can hear your pronunciation as well as any potential mistakes made.

Read aloud

Another way to help is reading aloud. Being able to speak fluently takes time and lots of practise. Reading a book, magazine or article aloud can help to practise pronunciation and boosts confidence in being able to speak with the right tone and flow consistently. You can read aloud to yourself, in pairs or a small group. This is particularly useful if you are learning English with others.

Watch films or series

Watching films or series is great for pronunciation and intonation (rise and fall of voice in speaking) as well as increasing vocabulary/phrases and listening to how grammar is used. It is important to watch films/series at your appropriate level or it can prove too challenging and decrease motivation to continue. If your level is beginner, shorter films or scenes are better. If your level is upper-intermediate/advanced, longer scenes or a complete film are appropriate. Being able to listen and understand words and context are very important in order to have a conversation and respond to others in a confident way.

Shadowing

Shadowing is a method used when students copy a sentence or short speech in order to increase fluency and accuracy. This is best used when copying a native speaker. That way, you can hear the intonation, pronunciation and stresses in words. If you have a native friend, use them to shadow from or use a film of your choice, pause it after a sentence and copy what they say, noticing the stresses, tone and intonation. If you can, record yourself and compare the voices so you can notice any big differences in pronunciation.

Join language communities

Being able to speak English fluently and confidently rests on how much you practise. The more you practise the better you will be. Joining local language communities and speaking to other people face to face is very helpful to boost confidence in speaking publicly and to new people. Joining a community can also help socially and build a network of new people for career opportunities or for personal social growth. If you are unable to join a local community, joining an online language community can help. Joining in zoom meetings, social media groups or group calls can also help to increase confidence and fluency with practising spoken English.
