Why Teach English to Children?
Children learning a language can be an important skill to have throughout their life. Learning any language can bring many benefits such as learning patience and consistency, as well as increase social interactions. Children can begin to learn a second language as early as 2 years old, because their brains are still developing, young children are able to retain more information than adults who start to learn a new language at a later age. Other cognitive benefits include the increase of empathy, children who are exposed to other linguistic backgrounds tend to have greater awareness of other people. Therefore, this can help social interactions throughout childhood and adult life. Learning English can help academically with greater opportunities to study and work abroad. It offers people the chance to advance their careers to a high level within companies all around world. People who have learned English from an early age have more confidence and skill to use the language to their advantage.

Setting Realistic Goals
It's important for children to have fun whilst learning English. Children are more likely to want to learn and will remember more information if the content of the lessons is fun and engaging. That's why Ace English lessons are great for your child, I set age-appropriate objectives for your child using short and long term goals. Each lesson is tailored to your child's individual learning pace and their interests. To keep engagement, I include lots of interactive activities centred around the objective, alongside short educational games to consolidate learning and have fun. If content is too easy or too difficult, children lose focus and attention. During Ace English lessons I aim for challenging but stimulating to keep their focus and encourage interaction.
The Role of the Teacher
My role as a teacher is to build a trusting and respectful relationship with each child. I like to get to know my students individually, learn about their likes and dislikes and encourage this through individually planned content. It is important for children to feel safe, comfortable and confident during the lessons so they are able to join in and practise their skills. I understand each child learns differently and they have their own learning style. I ensure I learn what this is and adapt any resources/materials I have to reflect this.

Classroom Setup
The classroom environment is important so children can learn in a calm and non-distracting environment. In my online setup I have a neutral background, calming colours and natural light. This enables the children to feel calm and not overstimulated during the lessons. It is important for the children's environment to also have a similar setup, no distracting devices or toys, natural light and comfortable area to sit (ideally not a bed). During Ace English lessons, pens and paper are all that is needed, I provide all other resources and materials for the lessons and share them with you where necessary.
Resources and materials
It is essential for children to have fun during Ace English lessons so the materials I provide are a mixture of different resources. This helps to keep engagement through each lesson so each lesson has variety and is different. Children are able to keep their focus and attention better if there is variety and not all the same.
In Ace English lessons, stories, games, role play, worksheets, and quizzes are just some examples of resources I use. Songs and rhymes are used for younger children where applicable. These resources encourage imagination and relevant use of grammar or vocabulary within their own speaking, reading or writing skills. They also reinforce listening skills, with understanding stories and instructions to complete the activities.

Regular Communication
Parental involvement is so important in order to keep up to date with your child's progress and take an interest in their learning. This helps the child to feel supported and be able to communicate their wins and struggles. I understand the importance of communication with parents during their child's learning so I ensure I have regular communication with parents about their progress and next steps of learning. I make sure I inform parents of improved and new skills learned so parents can see the progress their child is making. I also include any improvements we are working on during the lessons, and if requested, suggestions on how to support this learning at home including any helpful ideas, examples, or links to further support learning. I aim to communicate with parents every couple of weeks with relevant progress.
Regular Assessments
Assessing progress is crucial in order to keep on track with relevant learning and encourages learning at a reasonable pace. I aim to assess children's learning every couple of months. This helps us to stay on track with our short term objectives and long term goals. I use a couple of different methods to assess learning depending on the long term goals. If the long term goal is to pass an official exam, I use relevant sample papers to assess pass rate and use the results to highlight weaker areas. If the long term goal is to speak more fluently and accurately, I have my own assessment materials I use in order to measure progress in grammar, vocabulary and fluency skills. The results of these assessments are communicated with parents with a focus on the positives and what the child has achieved within a certain period of time. The assessments are carried out in a fun activity way instead of a formal test to ensure each child feels comfortable and is able to answer the questions without additional pressure.
